When God’s Spirit Falls On A Mother!

Introduction:
When you survey the Bible for men who were used by God in a mighty way, you always find a mother of strength and great convictions about God. For Moses, there was Jochebed, his mother and Amram his father (Ex 6:20). For Samuel, there was Hannah his mother. For Isaac, there was Sarah his mother. For Jacob, Rebekah his mother. For Jacob’s twelve sons, Leah and Rachel were the chosen vessels of motherhood. For Obed, there was Ruth. [Interestingly, there is not that much said about David’s mother in Scripture]. For Solomon, there was Bathsheba his mother. For John the Baptist, there was Elizabeth his mother. And our Lord Jesus, his mother, the blessed Mary. I will not focus on just one of these mothers today. They all share some things in common.
I want to speak about what they share alike and how we can find common place with our mothers and fathers. All of these mothers share the following: They had a strong conviction about God’s purpose and promise. They believed that God would use their sons in a miraculously way to be a blessing to others. In each situation where a mother or even a father used ungodly motifs and schemes, God judged them for their unrighteous behavior. Even though some of their tactics were not exemplary of Godly character, God superseded, and His divine purpose prevailed.
When God’s Spirit Falls On A Mother!
1. They had a strong conviction about God’s purpose and promise.
2. They believed that God would use their sons in a miraculously way to be a blessing to others.
3. In each situation where a mother or even a father used ungodly motifs and schemes, God judged them for their unrighteous behavior.
a. Sarah and Hagar: The world is still at odds because of it.
b. Rebekah and Jacob’s judgment seen in Jacob’s sons being divided over Joseph. Biblical scholars speak of the validity of scripture when we read of how biblical authors record not just the glory of its heroes but also the failures of those heroes as well.
c. David and Beersheba: their first born died as a result of their sin.
4. Even though some of their tactics were not exemplary of Godly character, God superseded, and His divine purpose prevailed.
Conclusion
Many of us can relate to the example of a godly mother. I am afraid that these examples are running too few today. When the world now is consumed with wealth, education, individual careers, and success, who has time anymore for family. There are subjects in school for anything you want to do but there are no subjects for motherhood, fatherhood, how to be a godly husband, or how to be a godly wife. Each one now because of Gnostic undertones believes that they know what to do. So children find it easier to rebel against their parents to do things their own way. That might explain why we are in the shape that we are in now.
Years ago, the Black community was motivated by only one source: God. But not today. Self-awareness, self-success, education, money are the motivating factors today. When mothers are working more in the job market, raising a family is little by little being pushed aside by careers, sports, and video games. We need to get back to the way it was. Not all of it then was right. But the part then about the whole family going to Sunday school and church we need to embrace. The part back then when mothers and fathers were in the WORD studying instead of now, grown adults are consumed with Facebook, tic tac, and social media. The social distancing that we knew about in the 70s and 80s was when you stepped in some chicken doodoo. Back then you didn’t do that much shopping because (1) black folk at one time couldn’t go into all those stores and (2) we didn’t have a lot of money to spend. Our mothers took what little they had and bought us some clothes that they knew would last. Those old brogans were uncomfortable at first. But after a few washings in that ringer washer, and putting those clothes out on that line, they felt better and better. We wore “Dunlap” shoes! Kids didn’t laugh at the clothes and shoes you had on at school, because all of our parents shopped at the same “Ma and Pa” stores. So, everybody had on the same thing.
Our parents worked hard then and they showed us how to work. And momma always had a hot meal waiting on you when you came from the field working. We had fast food then. Well, there was no McDonalds or Burger King in the country, but we had fast food. By the time your mother or grandmother put that food on your plate, you ate it up as fast as you could. Well, they did tell us to slow down.
When you got sick, mommy always had a home remedy to make you feel better. If you got hurt, it seemed like mommy would stop heaven and hell to fix you back up. When there were issues at school, mommy would come down to the school to straighten everything out. Sometimes she sided with the teacher and sometimes she sided with you. Most times then, the teachers were right. You ended up paying for it when you got home. You would hear mommy say, “You ain’t gonna embarrass me down at that school!” Because to our mothers, the way we were outside of their presence was a direct reflection on them. Oh boy, we have gotten so far away.
What is the problem? 50 years ago, the majority of African Americans went to church. 50 years later, the majority of African Americans don’t go to church. We got to get back to church. All of those godly men in the bible had praying, worshipping, God fearing mothers. We got to get back to church. God is our answer. God’s greatest institution in the Bible and even now is the HOME. We need more praying mothers. We need more god-fearing mothers. If she’s praying, God fearing, and worshipping the Lord, she won’t have a problem submitting; she wont have a problem working with her husband. We got to get back to church! I remember both of my grandmothers at church. Oh, what a time. They didn’t wait on church, they brought church with them. Today, we are just going to church. That’s why our churches are so cold, we are still going to church. We hadn’t made it there yet.
WE GOTTA GET BACK TO CHURCH!!!
OUR MOTHERS!
1. Had a strong conviction about God’s purpose and promise. THEY BELIEVED IN THE LORD JESUS! THEY BELIEVED HE DIED AND ROSE FROM THE DEAD!
2. Believed that God would use their sons in a miraculously way to be a blessing to others.
3. In each situation where a mother or even a father used ungodly motifs and schemes, God judged them for their unrighteous behavior. YES, OUR PARENTS MADE MISTAKES. THEY WERE NOT PERFECT. BUT THAT IS STILL MY MOMMA AND MY DADDY!
4. Even though some of their tactics were not exemplary of Godly character, God superseded, and His divine purpose prevailed.
