APPLICATION
1. The term mother or mothers of the church is not directly scripture. The indirect link could be Titus 2:3-5. There is no Mother’s Board in the New Testament. These terms are more associated with the so-called modern church than the first century church. I perceive no harm in the current titles and positions of mothers in the church today comparative to the New Testament church.
2. The term mothers are more so associated with wives of elders and wives of deacons (1 Tim 3:11). The New Testament speaks about deaconess who also served in the churches.
a. Rom 16:1, I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant (deaconess) of the church at Cenchreae,
b. Paul’s high placement of women in ministry should be noted.
- Rom 16:3, Priscilla is the wife of Aquila. Paul places her name first in Romans 16:3.
1. Paul met them in Corinth, according to Acts 18:1, 2.
2. Acts 18:18, 19, Paul leaves the couple in Ephesus. Notice the name order. Priscilla is mentioned first. Is this significant?
3. Aquila and Priscilla explained the gospel and gave great instruction to Apollos. Acts 18: 24 And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. 26 And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.
ii. Junia is noted among the apostles in Romans 16:7. I don’t think this verse implies that she was an apostle but that her good reputation was well known among the apostles.
c. All three of the names in Romans 16:12 are feminine.
d. Julia in Romans 16:15 is a feminine name.
3. Without loss of generality, I will group mothers and deaconess in the same category.
4. As a spouse of a deacon or elder, you have a role of service in the church. It is difficult at times to understand this position because it was your spouse that received the appointment in the church to serve, not you. Then why serve?
a. You will want to assist your spouse in this spiritual and also human position and situations.
b. You will need to assist your spouse in certain confidential matters.
c. Your spouse will need you more so than anyone else for support and strength.
d. Your main service will first be to your spouse and then afterwards to the needs of those in the church and community. See all the biblical references given for details.
5. The church must be aware of other women in the church with the gifts of service and/or teaching, who either may not be married, or husbands may not be believers, or husbands may not be out be in any church leadership position, but to allow these women to serve. The New Testament called them deaconess.
